Fat grafting, also known as autologous fat transfer, is becoming more popular as a breast reconstruction method. Liposuction is used to remove fat tissue from other parts of your body, mainly your thighs, abdomen, and buttocks, for fat grafting. To reconstruct the breast, the tissue is converted into a liquid and injected into the area. Lipofilling, a type of fat grafting, has been used for years to correct minor discrepancies in the contour, balance, or location of the reconstructed breast in comparison to the other breast. Doctors reasoned that if that worked, they might be able to use fat to rebuild an entire breast. Fat grafting may appear to be a “less risky” method because it does not require significant surgery. We don’t know how successful it will be in the long run, though. Because fat grafting is such a new surgery, no major clinical studies have been conducted. There are less than 100 women in the studies, and the average follow-up time is less than four years.
